There is no better time than the present, take it from Macy Gray. The Grammy-winning artist has released the video for her meditative track “Buddha.”
In the Teyana Taylor-directed clip, Gray takes a moment to reflect on her acclaimed career that spans two decades. As she performs the motivating tune on a grim stage and roller skates in a room filled with vinyl records, candid standouts of her success are played in flashbacks of saved videos.
Gray mentioned the video is much deeper than a tribute of her crowning achievements. She calls it “a little story about my battles with mental health.”
“Though it has held me up and set me back many times, I was able to write this song because I am winning my war with it,” Gray shared with Rolling Stone. “And I’m able to celebrate my present and look forward to my future because of it. To everybody struggling with something, it’ll be OK, just don’t let it beat you. Buddha says ‘concentrate the mind in the present’ — and that’s where it’s at all the time.”
“Buddha,” which features renowned guitarist Gary Clark Jr., appears on Gray’s latest album, Ruby. The release was listed in the top 10 of Rated R&B’s top 25 R&B albums of 2018.
