Any new Ms. Lauryn Hill music is better than no new music at all. The avant-garde musician has recorded vocals for Pusha T’s thoughtful new song “Coming Home.”
As a detailed narrator, Pusha T takes on the harsh realities of Black men whose fast way of living leads to long-term imprisonment. In the heart of this track, which has a sonic depth to its production, lies Hill’s raspy vocals that evoke an influential message.
“When love is gone, you’ll hold on to anything / Some do wrong, just to feel anything / But when the void is filled, you’ll stand up to anything / When love is real, you can do anything,” she sings on the chorus.
Pusha T talked to Ebro Darden of Beats 1 about what it meant to have Ms. Hill on his new song. “It was just super important to me to definitely have her on it. Lauryn, her discography, it means everything,” he said.
The last time fans have heard Ms. Hill on wax was in 2016 for a re-imagined version of “I Find It Hard To Say (Rebel)” from her 2002 MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 album. Prior to that, she rerecorded iconic Nina Simone classics for a tribute album to the High Priestess of Soul in 2015.
