A Marvin Gaye live album is set to be released for the first time on vinyl on October 18 via Motown/UMe.
What’s Going On Live contains Gaye’s vocals from his May 1972 concert at the Kennedy Centre in his hometown of Washington, D.C., during Marvin Gaye Day.
This rare set, first issued on CD in 2001 as part of an extended deluxe edition, is Gaye’s only time performing his 1971 career-defining album What’s Going On in its entirety.
For the vinyl debut of What’s Going On Live, John Morales, who has remixed Gaye’s Love Man sessions, mixed the upgraded recordings. Alex Abrash mastered the live material that includes renditions of “That’s the Way Love Is,” “You,” “Right On,” and “Wholy Holy.”
What’s Going On Live will be available on double black discs, as well as a limited, two-disc turquoise edition with deluxe gatefold packaging. The set will also come in CD, standard digital, ADM (Apple Digital Masters), and 96kHz/24-bit HD digital audio editions.
In addition, the album will include rare photos from the 1972 performance and new liner notes by Gaye’s biographer Davis Ritz.
What’s Going On Live follows Gaye’s shelved 1972 album You’re the Man, which was released in March.
