Masego loves to celebrate women — hence the title of his 2018 album, Lady Lady. The Jamaican singer returns with his new single titled “Big Girls,” which includes additional vocals from Ivana of R&B duo VanJess.
Serving as an ode to body positivity, the genre-blending tune seems to pull similar stylings from Baltimore Club artists Jimmy Jones’ “Watch Out For The Big Girls” and Young Leek’s “Jiggle It.” There’s also a slight cadence of Missy Elliott’s 2008 hit “Ching-A-Ling.”
In a press release, Masego revealed the song was inspired from his recent trip to Kenya. “I was in Nairobi, and there was a group of women that were the life on the party—I’m talkin’ Lizzo energy,” he said. “I asked someone who they were, and they told me ‘that’s the Big Girls Crew.’ So I made a song about this party I went to on the great continent and just painted a scene of this cool event, called it the Cake Club, Big Girls get in free.”
It is unclear at the time of publishing if “Big Girls” is an official single from an upcoming project. Last month, he released a music video for “Queen Tingz” featuring Tiffany Gouche.
In other news, Masego has a few live shows lined up this fall including the Life Is Beautiful Music & Art Festival, CRSSD Festival, Austin City Limits and Afropunk Atlanta.
