After a brief Danity Kane reunion, independent R&B sensation DAWN launches her new era of music with two new singles: “Slim Thicc” featuring Trakgirl and “Ay Papi” featuring Brooke Candy.
Produced by Trakgirl (Jhene Aiko, Tiffany Evans), the dancehall-tinged track “Slim Thicc” praises a woman’s’ curves. Meanwhile, Ay Papi” borrows elements from flamenco, with a spicy guest verse from Candy.
DAWN also released an accompanying video, directed by Monty Marsh. The video can be viewed above.
Both “Slim Thicc” and “Ay Papi” showcase DAWN’s special skill of blending genres in her music. In April, shortly before embarking on the tour that supported her fifth studio album New Breed, DAWN spoke with Rated R&B about her passion for genre-blending.
“Whether it was with Dirty Money or with Danity Kane, we were always pushing for different sounds, different opportunities,” she said. “Coming from New Orleans, when you see the gumbo pot of culture that’s there, it’s no surprise that I would cross genres and make those different types of sounds. It’s organic for me because that’s what I grew up around.”
