After releasing her new single “Lemon Cake” last month, legendary percussionist/singer Sheila E. premieres the official video via Rated R&B.
In the glamorous clip, directed by Shae Sterling, Sheila E. invites a few friends for a small get together. Sheila not only provides them with live music in the living room but also treats everyone to a slice of lemon cake.
The Grammy-nominated and Emmy-nominated artist filmed the video at a home she rented on Airbnb.
“I wanted everything to be white in the house,” Sheila E. tells Rated R&B. “I wanted everyone to wear white and the only color worn would be a yellow dress. I also wanted to look for a home that had a large kitchen because I wanted to bake a lemon cake in the video.”
“Lemon Cake” was inspired by Sheila E.’s early memories of being in the studio with her longtime collaborator Prince.

“When we first started recording in the studio, we would bring sweets and stuff,” she says. “We liked popcorn, chocolate, coffee, wine, chocolate cake…and lemon cake. I said to him, ‘I make really good lemon cake and chocolate cake.’ But one of our favorite cakes was lemon cake. There was a place we used to get our lemon cakes from in Los Angeles by the studio. I made a lemon cake and that was just the story basically it’s talking about how I love lemon cake but also how much he loved it.”
While fans may be anticipating a new album from Sheila E., she plans to focus on releasing singles at the moment. “It’s challenging for us as artists to put our blood, sweat and tears into a project and it’s gone in two weeks,” she explains. “Right now, I’m just going to release singles until I know if I want to put out an album.”
