Electronic music duo Disclosure (Guy Lawrence and Howard Lawrence) has enlisted R&B singers Kehlani and Syd for a new song titled “Birthday.”
On the smooth tune, Kehlani and Syd contemplate about calling an ex on their birthday.
“Can I call you on your birthday? / Just to make sure that you’re okay / Would you prefer it if I’d go ghost? / And let you go your own way,” Syd sings on the chorus. Kehlani chimes in on the second verse singing, “I ain’t even callin’ for no reconciliation / I just want to tap in and see how you been.”
Howard shared the inspiration behind “Birthday” in a statement. “We wrote the song with Syd originally, and we were definitely going on that Brandy, Monica, and Aaliyah vibe; that was just how we were all feeling that day,” he explained.
Guy added, “It’s the oldest song on the album by far so has definitely stood the test of time and deservedly made the cut. And the addition of Kehlani just took it to the next level and turned into a fire duet.”
“Birthday” appears on Disclosure’s new album Energy, which is out now. The album also features an appearance from Kelis.
