Emerging singer Maeta has teamed up with rapper Buddy for her new single “Teen Scene.”
On the Kaytranada-produced track, Maeta tells a story about a relationship she has outgrown. After realizing she and her partner are not on the same frequency, she ultimately decides it’s time to leave him behind.
“You were backwards / You’d act like it’s for me/ So I left you in the teen scene,” she sings over a pulsing beat.
Speaking on her new track, Maeta said in a statement, “I’ve always used music to help work through my emotions. And though I’m a mostly happy and grateful person, it’s always the sad and bittersweet songs that really get me. That’s what makes music so special to me at this point in my life.”
She added, “I hope my new music can get people in their feels and help them deal with whatever relationships they’re going through right now.”
The 20-year-old singer also released a fun-filled video for “Teen Scene,” which was directed by Child (Janelle Monaé, Lucky Daye, Ari Lennox, BJ The Chicago Kid).
“Filming the video for ‘Teen Scene’ was so fun,” she told Complex. “It was just a bunch of cool people that collaborated for my project, which felt amazing. All my people were together working on the same thing – it made me a little emotional. Working with Buddy was great! He’s hilarious and didn’t take it too seriously. Everybody was just in good spirits the whole day, and I think you can see that in the video. I’m so happy with it!”
“Teen Scene” is the first offering from Maeta’s forthcoming EP, Habits, which is set to arrive later this year. The EP will feature production from Mustard (Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Keyshia Cole) and The Orphanage (Kehlani, Demi Lavato, Alina Baraz).
Habits will follow Maeta’s 2019 EP, Do Not Disturb, which featured her popular track “Babygirl.” At this time, it’s the budding singer’s most-streamed song with over 310,000 plays on Spotify alone. Prior to releasing Do Not Disturb, she collaborated with Arin Ray for the remix of her smooth tune “Be Mine.”
