Rap phenom Kendrick Lamar might have said be “HUMBLE” in 2017, but Phony Ppl, the hip five-man collective, are done with being modest and explain why on their new single “On My Shit” featuring Joey Bada$$. It arrives with a wondrous music video that can be watched below.
True to their sonic vision to incorporate “more movement and brighter colors” to their next batch of material, the new single’s production, helmed by the band, has somewhat of a carnival ambience to it.
The voice of Elbee Thrie, the group’s frontman, is more chromatic, vibrant, and bolder than the previous 2020 track “Fkn Around,” as his new swagger is difficult to police on the song about trading in a weakling persona to be a hard case.
“On My Shit” is Phony Ppl’s second official single of 2020. As already noted, the boundless band released the Megan Thee Stallion-assisted track earlier this year. The funky collaboration won the cinque top 10 single success on the Billboard Adult R&B Airplay and urban adult contemporary charts, respectively.
“Everything that we work on, we just take it note by note and try to make something we enjoy. It’s been proven that people enjoy it, too,” Thrie expressed exclusively to Rated R&B on the feat of their first charting single.“We had no clue that [this song] was going to be something that the radio would be interested in or something that would be top 10 worthy on Billboard charts. It’s a blessing, honestly.”
Phony Ppl are gearing up for an amazing 2021, with the release of their follow-up to mō’zā-ik set to widen their reach and push their sound.
“I know jumping into this project one thing that we definitely wanted to zero in on was more movement from top to bottom,” said Maffyuu to Rated R&B. “Not all the tracks are going to be just straight fall on the floor and shake your butt stuff, but we wanted to definitely tap into the more groovy side that we all possess. We’ve been creating songs with that in mind to get the people moving and to balance the catalog out.”
