Finding the strength to press on after the loss of a parent doesn’t happen overnight. R&B newcomer Rileyy Lanez, who understands this all too well, salutes her fallen father on his birthday with a new track titled “When I See You (Lamont’s Song).”
The candid song, which pulls from Fantasia’s 2007 hit single of a similar title, is a stroll through Lanez’s life after losing her dad to gun violence six years ago.
She recounts moments shared between them the night before his untimely death. She also uses the song to provide him family updates like him now having grandkids and how much her mother misses him.
“Losing him was the biggest heartbreak I’ve ever dealt with it,” said Lanez in a press statement. “It’s a different type of pain, a pain that a lot of us share. A song for you and your loss.”
With the new song, Lanez drops a corresponding music video. Watch it below.
Last year, Lanez burst on the scene with her debut EP Beautiful Mistakes. Since then, her commitment to music has led her to perform the official theme song (“Part of the Game”) for the upcoming Starz series, Power Book III: Kanan, alongside 50 Cent and NLE Choppa.
