At this year’s Soul Train Awards, Maxwell will receive the highest honor. He will be presented with the coveted Legend Award bestowed to extraordinary individuals who have left an influential mark in the music industry.

Twenty-five years ago this spring, Maxwell made his impressive debut with his classic 1996 album, Urban Hang Suite. He followed with four additional solid sets, including his innovative Embrya and blackSUMMERS’night.

Maxwell expressed his gratitude in a statement, commenting, “It’s an honor to be presented with the Legend award by a community that’s been growing with me throughout my career. I’m so grateful to be sharing this moment with everyone and returning to the Apollo for an evening of excellence.”

Past Legend Award recipients include Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Erykah Badu, Toni Braxton, Teddy Riley, and others.

Hosted by Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold, the 2021 Soul Train Awards airs live on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 8 p.m. EST on BET.

In other news, Maxwell recently hinted at new music in a now-deleted Instagram post. blacksummers’NIGHT, his much-anticipated next release, is the third and final album to his R&B trilogy.

He celebrated the 25th anniversary of his debut album with Rated R&B for an in-depth retrospective, which also featured commentary from frequent collaborator and Sade bandmate Stuart Matthewman.
