Mahalia is not the kind of woman to be bossed around — and she makes this clear in her new song “Whatever Simon Says.”
She sings on the JD. Reid-produced track, “I’ve never been the kind of bitch to ever let a bitch get in my head / So you should just say less / Never done what Simon says / Wear your makeup, make it look casual / Wear your hair straight, actually natural / That don’t make no sense, honey / I don’t need savin’, I am not a damsel.”
Speaking on the inspiration behind “Whatever Simon Says,” Mahalia wrote on Instagram, “Uniqueness is beautiful. It’s a superpower, in fact ‘Whatever Simon Says’ is my gift to all of you reading this who are over ppl telling you what to do .. how to speak .. how to look. It’s for all of you who are no longer compromising your happiness for the benefit of somebody else.”
Mahalia shared a self-directed music video to coincide with the release of “Whatever Simon Says,” where she does her beauty regimen as she performs it.
“Whatever Simon Says” follows Mahalia’s previous 2022 release, “Letter to Your Ex.” The self-written tune arrived with a music video as well.
Mahalia released a collaboration with AJ Tracey last year called “Roadside.” She also enlisted Rico Nasty for “Jealous,” which was released ahead of “Whenever You’re Ready.”
It’s been almost three years since Mahalia released a full-length album. Love and Compromise dropped in 2019 and was among Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums that year.
Since that LP, Mahalia put out the short and sweet EP Isolation.
