Alternative R&B newcomer Tre. Charles makes his official introduction on his debut EP, Currently.
It consists of four tracks, all written, produced and recorded by Charles. Although the Currently only runs for 11 minutes, Charles doesn’t waste any time exploring weighty topics related to personal doubts, mental health, masculinity and society’s pressures.
The project’s atmospheric production provides a backdrop for Charles’ smooth and soulful vocals to glide effortlessly. The opener, “Lately,” and “Memory” are immediate standouts on Currently.
“There’s strength in vulnerability, but a lot of times, we don’t give each other the room we need to be vulnerable or flawed, because it might not be seen as ‘cool’, and that amplifies the negative narratives, and reinforces old tropes that are not helpful to our growth. I think in order to move forward, we need to let go of control,” says Charles.
He adds, “This project is more of a journal of where I am right now in my healing process, and it highlights these nuances through a lens of vulnerability, with the aim of bringing honesty and insight to the forefront of the conversation, which will hopefully inspire and sustain growth.”
Charles released a visual for “Lately” in March, which shows him taking a stroll around New York City.
“This track delves into the realm of self-awareness and mental health, addressing the overwhelmingness of today’s social media landscape and the constraints of overthinking,” Charles wrote in the video’s description on YouTube.
Charles recently opened for Devon Gilfillian at his tour stop at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, North Carolina. Charles has upcoming show dates in a few cities in North Carolina, including Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham and Charlotte.
