Ending a romantic relationship doesn’t always mean all love is lost. Usher’s new single “Good Good” featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage tells a nuanced story of a cordial breakup.
Produced by Mel & Mus, “Good Good” plays like a love letter to a former lover. Usher opens the track with a bittersweet message to an ex about their failed relationship. While he would have liked for things to work between them, he holds nothing but love and hopes she will find her soulmate.
“I hate that we didn’t make it to forever / Probably ain’t gettin’ back together / But that don’t mean that I can’t wish you better / We ain’t good good, but we still good,” Usher sings in the radio-ready chorus.
Walker appears in the second verse, offering a woman’s perspective: “It didn’t work, but I hope you find another / I wish you peace, I wish you good sex and good sleep / Find the girl of your dreams ’cause I sleep well at night knowin’ this ain’t meant to be.”
In verse three, 21 Savage enters with smooth bars that echo the song’s theme, punctuating each line with his signature ad-libs. Despite not being with his ex, he is willing to support her in any way, including financially.
“I know the person you is (Yeah) / That’s why I still wanna be friends (On God) / If you wanna open up a new salon, I still help pay for the wigs (Straight up) / And I help with the lease (On God) / You know I ain’t never been cheap (21),” he raps.
Usher’s latest collaboration is far from random. He previously collaborated with Walker on her song “Come Thru,” which samples his 1997 hit “You Make Me Wanna.”
In April, 21 Savage joined Usher on stage at his My Way Las Vegas residency to sing “My Boo.” 21 Savage, an R&B at heart, is known for singing R&B classics in his own special way.
Circling back to “Good Good,” it’s Usher’s second single release of the year. He previously released his No. 1 hit “GLU,” the lead single from his ninth album.
The highly-awaited project is slated to release this fall on mega, Usher and L.A. Reid’s new imprint, in partnership with Larry Jackson’s newly-minted company gamma.
On Sept. 24, Usher will launch his European residency at La Seine Musicale in Boulogne Billancourt, France. The residency concludes Oct. 5.
Then, he will resume his My Way: The Las Vegas Residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM from Oct. 11 through Oct. 28.
