Usher has announced that his ninth album, Coming Home, will release on Feb. 9, 2024.
His new album will arrive on his mega imprint with L.A. Reid, in partnership with Larry Jackson’s gamma. label.
“We’ve put a lot of thought and creativity into this new album to tell a story that is open to interpretation and that will connect with people in different ways,” says Usher. “I know this has been a long time coming for my fans and what I’ll say is that all good things come to those who wait. I hope you enjoy it once you hear it.”
L.A. Reid adds, “USHER is one of the greatest superstars of our time. His undeniable talent, work ethic and charisma has sustained an incredibly successful career for over 30 years in the business, an achievement not to be taken lightly. Our history of working with each other made putting this body of work together a true passion project and I’m proud to be by his side as he reveals it to the world on February 11.”
The news arrives just moments after it was revealed that the R&B superstar will headline Apple Music’s Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show.
According to Apple Music, Coming Home contains 20 tracks, including “Good Good” featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage.
The song was released Aug. 4, and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales chart.
The tracklist for Coming Home has not been unveiled yet, though his previously shared tracks, “GLU” and “Boyfriend” are expected to appear on the album. The former song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart. It was co-produced by Avila Brothers, Lil Jon and Sean Garrett.
In an interview with Rated R&B, Garrett shared the creative intent behind “GLU.” “I felt like the concept had to be extremely unique. It had to be said in a way that was straddling the line a bit but comes across where everyone can enjoy it. And kind of getting back to just making a woman feel good; that’s what Usher does,” Garrett told Rated R&B.
He continued, “He goes crazy with the vocals and it’s truly what R&B music is. We took every piece to the song and took our time to put it together properly to make sure that it felt amazing and was an elevation of what R&B has been happening for late. We wanted to make sure that this was gonna be something that everybody would love.”
Coming Home will mark Usher’s first album since 2016’s Hard II Love. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart and No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Hard II Love included singles such as “Rivals” featuring Future and “No Limit” featuring Young Thug.
In 2018, Usher surprised fans with A, his joint EP with producer Zaytoven that he released on his 40th birthday. “I want people to download it and feel the freedom of where we were when we were creating it,” Usher told Apple Music, when asked what he wanted listeners to take away from the EP. “I want them to feel the spontaneity of what happened. I want them to celebrate with me knowing this is a soundtrack for an amazing moment that just happened between me and Zaytoven.”
