Jennifer Hudson is back in the studio. The award-winning singer and talk show host went to social media on Wednesday (May 22) to announce that she is recording new music.

“Today is the day yal, back in the studio. Back to the music!!” Hudson wrote in a caption for a photo of her in a recording booth behind a mic.

It’s unclear if Hudson is working on a song or a project, but either way, her voice is certainly missed.

In 2021, Hudson voiced the soundtrack for RESPECT, the Aretha Franklin biopic in which she stars as the Queen of Soul. The album included her rendition of Franklin’s hits such as “Respect,” “Ain’t No Way,” “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You),” “Chain of Fools,” “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” and more.

The soundtrack also includes Hudson’s cover of Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” and her original song, “Here I Am (Singing My Way Home),” which she co-wrote with Carol King and Jamie Hartman.

Hudson won Oustanding Actress in a Motion Picture at the 2022 NAACP Image Awards. (Hudson also won at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards for her talk show, The Jennifer Hudson Show.)

Soundtrack aside, it’s been nearly 10 years since Hudson last released a studio album. Her 2014 effort, JHUD, was released in September of that year and featured collaborations with Timbaland, Iggy Azalea and T.I.

The opening track, “Dangerous,” was includes writing and production by dvsn, the duo composed of producer Nineteen85 and vocalist Daniel Daley.

JHUD debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart, marking Hudon’s third consecutive top 10 album at the time.
