Want to impress Skylar Simone? It’s best to do so by actions, not words. On her new song “Shut Up,” produced by D’Mile (Bruno Mars, Victoria Monét) and Yonatan Watts (Ariana Grande, Chris Brown), Simone isn’t interested in someone who can’t back up what they say — in the bedroom.
“Can you move my body / The way you run your mouth / I wanna feel you move my body / Before your time runs out,” she sings on the flirtatious groove. Her breathy vocals flow over the melodic production like a summer breeze.
“One of my favorite things about ‘Shut Up’ is how playful both lyrically and sonically it is,” Simone tells Rated R&B. “It also allows me to show my versatility as an artist.”
She adds, “Fun fact: The chorus was originally just going to be used as a sample in the background — until we realized that part was too good not to have it play a bigger role in the song!” Good call on their part — the chorus is irresistibly catchy.

“Shut Up” is the second single from Simone’s upcoming EP, Shiver, out July 19 via Def Jam Recordings. The EP will include the hair-raising title track, also produced by D’Mile.
“I wanted to find that perfect blend of the ’90s R&B I grew up listening to and next wave / forward sonics and lyricism that I feel ultimately represent the artist I am and am striving to be,” Simone told Rated R&B of “Shiver.”
