Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Charlie Bereal has signed a record deal with Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Records in conjunction with gamma.
Bereal joins a roster that includes October London and Jane Handcock.
Continuing to celebrate his new deal with Death Row Records, Bereal has released his second single of the year, “Walk With the Father.”
Over a ’70s soul production, accompanied by horns and a bass guitar, Bereal presents a haunting portrayal of pursuing big dreams while living in Los Angeles. He is certain that not everything that glitters is gold.
“Hollywood ain’t no place good / It’ll take your soul, leave your mind out of control,” he sings on the self-produced track.
Speaking on his new single, Bereal says, “‘Walk With the Father’ is a song about people coming to LA with a dream to find out it’s not all what it seems.”
“Walk With the Father” follows Bereal’s song “Never Gonna Take My Love,” his first release on Death Row Records. It was co-produced by Bereal and Josef Liemberg and was surprise-dropped on July 26.
It has not yet been confirmed if either of Bereal’s released tracks is part of a larger project. In 2019, Bereal shared the album 11-11-11, which came out of casual jam sessions with Raphael Saadiq and Jairus Mozee.
“We were just recording for fun – it wasn’t for a specific project at first. Afterward, I listened back and decided to turn the best parts into individual songs,” Bereal explained.
Later in 2019, 11-11-11 was reissued and expanded into a deluxe version, consisting of four bonus tracks. Earlier this year, the standard LP was also packaged on powder-blue vinyl for the first time.
In 2023, Bereal had a productive year collaborating with Terrace Martin on several projects. These included Curly, Fine Tune, and I Left My Heart in Ladera, a joint project with Alex Isley. Additionally, he joined Martin early in 2024 for his EP Her Thoughts.
Circling back to 2023, Bereal contributed to writing, producing, and arranging music for BJ the Chicago Kid‘s Gravy album, which was featured on Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums of 2023 list.
Bereal also reunited with Tweet for a faithful remake of Curtis Mayfield’s 1970 classic “The Makings of You.”
