Gallant has released his new song “Crimes of Compassion.”
On the reflective track, produced by Ralph Castelli and Ariza, Gallant tries to pinpoint what sort of baggage is unintentionally being smuggled into a relationship and how it could have a negative impact.
“These crimеs of compassion leave you looking like you’rе lost in a labyrinth / Yeah, it keeps running circles ’round, circles ’round you,” he croons in the chorus.
Speaking on “Crimes of Compassion.,” Gallant explains, “I was talking about relationships and how one thing that poisons a particular relationship could come back in the next relationship—whether it’s with a friend, family member, or romantic partner, I was trying to diagnose the issue and speak to the cyclical nature of it all.”
He adds, “Musically, it follows an emotional arc, tracing different touchpoints of a relationship. You have to fix the issue before it manifests again.”
“Crimes of Compassion.” is the third offering from the Columbia, Maryland, native’s upcoming album, Zinc. The forthcoming project, which drops Sept. 27, also includes the singles “Coldstar.” and “Fly On the Wall (Osaka Version).”
Speaking on his new album, Gallant shared, “I saw Zinc. as the album I’d make if I had the chance to follow up my first record Ology again. It’s a fresh start without confusion and the pressures of being part of a big machine. When I started writing it, I had no label or large team. I met Ariza, and the process mirrored how I did Ology with Stint. All that mattered was if a song spoke to me and if it reflected all of the weird things that make up who I am as a fan and as a person. I entertained myself and got a lot off my chest. I stuck to my guns and created an unfettered body of work that feels like me.”
Zinc. is Gallant’s first full-length album since 2019’s Sweet Insomnia. His final album on Warner Records included the 6LACK-assisted title track and “Compromise” featuring Sabrina Claudio.
In 2021, Gallant released his Neptune EP via EMPIRE. The project featured collaborations with Brandy (“Dynamite“), Arin Ray (“Third Eye Blind”), and VanJess (“No More Tries”).
In November 2023, Gallant released sneek, his joint project with musician and producer Terrace Martin. The nine-track EP included the lead single “311!” with Robert Glasper and Keyon Harrold.
