R&B breakout star Leon Thomas and rising singer Dylan Sinclair have joined forces to reimagine D’Angelo‘s classic “Brown Sugar.” The Amazon Music Original cover is part of the streaming service’s Black Music Month celebration.
“There are few tracks more important than D’Angelo’s ‘Brown Sugar,” says Thomas. “I’ve always been inspired by the song, and it was a true honor to pay tribute to it — collaborating with Dylan on this made it all the more special.”
Sinclair adds, “This record is special. Collaborating with Leon to honor its legacy while adding our own style is something I’ll never forget. Huge thanks to Amazon Music for making it happen.”
The original version is the lead single and title track to D’Angelo’s debut album, released in 1995. D’Angelo wrote and produced the record with Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
“Brown Sugar” peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Thomas’ new cover follows the release of MUTT Deluxe: HEEL, an extended edition of his lauded sophomore album, MUTT. The deluxe album contains nine new tracks, including “Mutt (CB Remix)” with Chris Brown, “Rather Be Alone” featuring Halle and the fan-favorite “Not Fair.”
Thomas, who was crowned Best New Artist at the 2025 BET Awards, is set to embark on his headlining Mutts Don’t Heel World Tour later this year and through spring 2026.
Meanwhile, Sinclair, a JUNO Award winner, released his debut album, For The Boy In Me, in 2024. “In a world where men are not encouraged to be vulnerable, this album FOR THE BOY IN ME disregards that, choosing to tell it like it is,” he explained.
Earlier this year, Sincliar returned with his single “What I Gotta Do,” which he wrote and produced.
