Steve Lacy picked up a Best Progressive R&B Album trophy for Gemini Rights at the 65th Grammy Awards. It’s Lacy’s first Grammy.
Lacy’s debut album, 2019’s Apollo XXI, was nominated when the award was named Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2020.
The campaign for Gemini Rights was launched in June 2022 with the release of the single “Mercury.” Lacy followed with the tracks “Bad Habit” and “Sunshine” featuring Fousheé.
The former of the last two went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in October 2022. It held the top spot for three consecutive weeks.
Gemini Rights stormed the Billboard 200 at No. 7 with 34,000 equivalent units. It gave Lacy his first top 10 debut on the main albums chart.
Lacy’s second album also entered at No. 1 on several Billboard charts, including Top Alternative Albums, Top R&B Albums and Top Rock & Alternative Albums.
Gemini Rights also was ranked at No. 19 on Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums of 2022 list.
“People who discover Gemini Rights will be satisfied to know that the future of R&B still lies in feel-good music,” wrote Rated R&B’s Edward Dave.
In addition to Best Progressive R&B Album, Lacy was nominated for four awards, including Song of the Year (“Bad Habit”), Record of the Year (“Bad Habit”) and Best Pop Solo Performance (‘Bad Habit”).
Lacy is slated to make his Grammy stage debut tonight as a performer.
