Some relationships are worth saving. On Lekan’s latest single, “Brand New,” the budding singer is open to start afresh.
Lekan’s velvety baritone vocals glide over a sluggish production helmed by the legendary Rodney Jerkins as he tries to work things out.
“We can make this thing brand new / If you really wanted to / It’s a clean slate just for you / Can’t think of a better move,” Lekan sings.
He doesn’t avoid accountability either (“You did dirt, I did dirt, that’s the end”), emphasizing the importance of honest communication in their relationship.
Speaking on his Darkchild-produced single, Lekan tells Rated R&B. “Rodney is a Legend. I want to make music that resonates with myself and the people around me, and Rodney makes that type of music. I had the chance to sing on his incredible production and wanted to make sure I executed well so he could be introduced to my voice in the best way possible. That then led me to working with him in person, where I could do nothing but soak up the knowledge he exuded naturally.”
Lekan continues, “He affirmed me and even when I wanted to go back on the record, he stopped me—told me it was good as is and that it was special. [It’s the] type of stuff you dream about, honestly. Glad this is the first of many records we’ll have together.”
“Brand New” arrives two months after the Columbus, Ohio, native’s previous single, “614,” produced by Bongo ByTheWay.
“This song is a slight introduction into my world and where I’m from,” Lekan explained. “I’m expressing the mentality I had to have within the place I grew up – hopeful and bright to dark and reflective.”
Later this summer, Lekan will join Tems on select dates of her Born in the Wild World Tour.
