Tank is coming to Broadway. The Grammy-nominated singer and actor has joined the cast of Alicia Keys‘ award-winning musical Hell’s Kitchen for a limited 13-week engagement.
Tank will take over the role of Davis after Tony Award-nominated actor Brandon Victor Dixon gives his final performance on Sunday, March 9. His first show is March 11.
“Stepping onto the Broadway stage is a dream come true. Music and acting have always been a part of my journey, and now, I get to bring them together in a whole new way,” says Tank.
He continues, “The energy of live theater is unmatched, and I’m honored to join this incredible cast and be part of telling this powerful story through Alicia Keys’ music. This transition is both thrilling and humbling, and I can’t wait to give audiences everything I’ve got!”
Inspired by Alicia Keys’ early life, Hell’s Kitchen is a coming-of-age musical about a teenage girl, Ali (played by Maleah Joi Moon), who wants to pursue her dreams in New York.
“I wanted to be able to tell a story about a girl really finding herself, her path,” Keys told Playbill.
“And ultimately, it being a love story between a mother and a daughter. And to be able to create the stories that we don’t actually get to see, you know, the very real-life stories that just aren’t often told.”
Hell’s Kitchen was written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz, directed by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif and choreographed by four-time Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown. All the music, lyrics and arrangements are helmed by Keys.
“The songs are really meant to speak to the characters,” Keys shared on The Today Show. “They’re really meant to move the story forward. Every time you hear the song, it’s in a new way. You know this song, and you love it, but you’re hearing it in a way you’ve never heard before. I think that’s such a powerful part.”
At the 67th Grammy Awards (Feb. 2), Hell’s Kitchen (Original Broadway Cast Recording) won Best Musical Theater Album, tallying Keys’ 17th Grammy.
While it will be Tank’s first time performing on Broadway, he’s no stranger to acting. He previously had roles in Lifetime’s Lust: A Seven Deadly Saga, HBO’s Togetherness, VH1’s Born Again Virgin and BET’s The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story.
Hell’s Kitchen is playing at Shubert Theatre. The play was transferred to Broadway in spring 2024 after making its debut at Newman Theater at The Public in fall 2023.
