After giving her lover a taste of his own “Medicine,” emerging singer Queen Naija drops a new track called “Karma.” On the breakup anthem, Naija reminds her ex that the way he mistreated her will eventually catch up to him.
“Feels just like yesterday when we were homeless / Got you some bread and started treating me bogus / Talking ’bout you wanted something new / Like I wasn’t good enough for you,” she sings on the first verse. She continues on the chorus, “You don’t gotta worry about me / You made it clear that you’re unhappy (yeah) / Go ahead and have your fun now / Just remember what goes around, comes around.”
The 22-year-old Detroit native began singing in church at age three and writing her own songs in third grade, but her focus shifted when she and her former husband found fame online with their popular YouTube channel. After her marriage fell apart last year, Naija returned to her lifelong passion and penned a powerfully unapologetic song detailing her side of the story — “Medicine.” The song debuted at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 in just three weeks.
“I wasn’t even thinking about trying to get the song on the radio or anything,” says Naija. “ I mostly did it because I knew people wanted to know what was going on with me and my ex, and I wanted to tell them myself why I wasn’t with him anymore.”
“Medicine” and “Karma” will appear on her forthcoming debut EP that will arrive this year. Speaking on the project, Naija says, “For me, it’s about changing people’s perspectives and letting them know they’re not alone in whatever they’re going through. I want to make music that captures people, that gets into your soul—the kind of songs you need to keep playing over and over.”
