Fans of soul/funk icon James Brown will need to Get on Up to the movie theaters this summer to see his biopic.

The Tate Taylor (“The Help”) directed film will feature a star-studded cast, including Oscar-winning and nominated actresses Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis, as well as Jill Scott, Tika Sumpter, and newcomer Chadwick Boseman (“42”), who plays Brown.

The biopic will focus on Brown’s life and career, from his childhood in Georgia to becoming the iconic Godfather of Soul. It will also touch on Brown’s personal and professional trials and tribulations, including his drug addiction and financial struggles.

Jill Scott recently spoke about embodying her role as Deirdre “Deedee” Jenkins, Brown’s second wife, in the film. She told Billboard, “I looked at the film as a mosaic with the most important part being [Deedee’s] still unbridled love and adoration for this huge personality and talent.”

“Get On Up” will be released in theaters on August 1, 2014.
