This week’s Throwback Thursday takes it way back to nearly four decades ago with Bobby Caldwell’s 1978 hit “What You Won’t Do For Love.”
“What You won’t Do For Love” may not seem familiar upon reading its title, but once you hear the tune it will definitely ring a bell. This breakout hit single was released from Caldwell’s debut album, titled synonymously with the track, and took R&B radio by storm. The Alfons Kettner-penned track hit No. 6 on the Hot Selling Soul Singles Chart and scored No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
This old school R&B jam has influenced the music industry heavily over the years. “What You Won’t Do For Love” has been covered and sampled by many great artists extending the life of the track and its longevity. These songs include Aaliyah’s “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number,” Mary J. Blige’s “Love No Limit” and Mariah Carey’s “Got a Thing 4 You.”
Though Caldwell has released a number of albums since his 1978 debut, none have lived up to the success of his first album due to the massive success of “What You Won’t Do For Love.”
Listen to the smooth tune and see if it just doesn’t bring back a memory or two.
