Rated R&B recently caught up with Musiq Soulchild while he was in Washington, D.C. The Philly native spoke candidly about a variety of topics including his forthcoming album, his inspiration to make music, the downfall fall of his duet album (9INE) with Syleena Johnson and more.
On ‘9INE’ Project…
There was no real support. There were folks in the background acting stupid. Folks got greedy. I just don’t associate with chaos. It kind of pissed Syleena off a little bit…I did a couple things with it but for the most part I kept my distance. It just started to get stupid. I feel bad because we could’ve toured with it, we could of made some cool moves with it…
On forthcoming album…
Yes, I’m actually on a new Musiq Soulchild album. I just signed with Warren Campbell on My Block Records. We’re taking our time with it because stuff is moving so fast. Whatever we thought was dope, three months later is not as dope anymore…we’re trying to get to a point where we’re making music that it doesn’t matter what’s going on.
On his inspiration for the album…
The fact that I got to make this bread [laughs]. This is business. This is my livelihood, so I got to get money, so I got to go do some work. My work just so happens to be making music. That’s my main inspiration for putting an album out.
On musical risks…
I haven’t taken any musical risks as far as the Musiq Soulchild brand. If anything, if there was a risk, the risk I’ve taken was listening to other people. That’s what I’ve been doing for the last past 15 years but people don’t understand. And I’ve won with some of it. I have and I’m grateful for that…
On The Husel persona…
Everything was crickets until I started doing this Husel thing.
