Kevin Ross continues to build momentum for his upcoming debut album, The Awakening, available March 24. The D.C. native has shared a visual for his latest single “Pick You Up.” The black-and-white visual finds Ross alone in a room as he gives himself a pep talk to get through hard times.
“‘Pick You Up’ is a narrative based off of a certain time in my life where I felt alone,” Ross told Vibe. “Like there was no way out of my circumstances. But it was like God gave me this song not only to encourage myself but to encourage others to stay strong and steadfast. We all are pieces of thread woven into the fabric of life. Which means we need each other in more ways than what we realize.”
In a recent interview with Rated R&B, Ross explained the meaning behind The Awakening. “It’s me waking up as a man,” he said. “Me waking up as an artist and understanding that my platform means something. I’m held accountable for the things that I say and the things that I think. You never know who’s listening. I think for me it was waking up for that. It was waking up for the God-given responsibilities that I have to the business, to the field of entertainment and to the world — in that I’m necessary, God told me I’m necessary and everybody else is necessary because we’re all made one of one. I just want to spread that message so that everybody can reach their full potential. The world could be a better place because of that.”
