Rated Next’s Eryn Allen Kane has released her first taste of new music in two years off her forthcoming EP, Imperial Soul.
Titled “Feel the Need,” the soul record is sultry and hypnotizing every time you listen. With help from live instrumentation, specifically a soaring trumpet, the sonic landscape of the Motown-esque record becomes varied in its attempts to make the audience viscerally feel the cadence of the song instead of simply acknowledging a wall of sound.
Kane uses the lyrics to craft a vivid picture of her memories with her mother. She even uses a personal anecdote as a guide for the first verse. “Born in a bitter cold winter / Tears of grey were raining down / Child here is your purpose / Oh mama said it’s gonna be alright”, Kane emotes as she lets her soulful cooing spell out her childhood angst.
On September 28, Kane will release her new EP Imperial Soul. The eight-track project follows 2016’s Aviary: Act II and her critically-acclaimed debut, Aviary: Act I, which dropped in 2015.
Kane’s rise in the industry has been modest, but she’s been able to make some waves. She’s collaborated on cult classic hits like “Sunday Candy” with Chance the Rapper. Kane’s talents also met the intrigue of Prince and netted her spotlights in publications such as Vogue and The Fader.
