Dawn Richard has released the single “Maybe” to accompany the arrival of Patriot Releasing’s newest movie, Kinky.
Produced by NoiseCastle III — who is a frequent collaborator with Richard — and penned all by herself, “Maybe” is a genre-bending record that enlists a slow-burning synth to reel you in and sensual 808s that command you to stay and listen.
Richard recalls a distant love being shrouded by contingencies as she sings, “Maybe you’ll love me later / Can you do me that favor / Maybe you’ll thank me later / When the crooked world turns straighter.” This song is clearly one of longing but it has clear sexual undertones that give it an interesting duality.
The Kinky (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) will release on September 21. It features appearances from Day 26’s Willie Taylor, Breazelle, Shemida J and Durty So Clean.
Kinky, described as an African American 50 Shades of Grey-inspired sex drama, Richard plays Dr. Joyce Richardson, a surgeon who begins an intimate relationship with a wealthy investor. Before long, the couple start dabbling in ‘kinky’ sexual activities that leads them into a world of BDSM and hardcore sexual exploration.
Written and directed by Chocolate City’s Jean Claude Lamarre and distributed by Patriot Releasing, Kinky will hit U.S. theaters on October 12.
Ahead of the film, Richard will be traveling across North American with Danity Kane for their reunion tour The Universe is Undefeated. She is expected to perform new music of her own including “Jealousy.”
