Fresh off the release of his new film Blood Brother and his surprise mixtape 11.28, Trey Songz stopped by GQ headquarters as part of his promo trail. During his visit, he shared 10 daily essentials that he can’t live without.
Here are five interesting takeaways from his carefree interview.
1. When he’s out on the road, Santal 26 candles remind him of home.
“These are all around my house, at home,” he said. “So when I’m on the road — hotel to hotel, tour bus — I love to have this smell because it makes me feel like I’m in a familiar setting.”
2. He prefers Ricola cough drops over Halls.
“I used to love Halls — and this is a note to Halls — in case ya’ll want to send me some for free, but Ricola is much more natural. It’s longer lasting. You know when you’re singing a lot on the road, and you’re out late night, waking up early doing promo press or whatever have you, this kind of keeps your voice and throat in a good condition.”
3. His keeps several Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones handy for studio sessions.
“When I first started, I was using them in the studio and I love the way they sounded so much; kind of like a real genuine sound you would hear like in a car or places you listen to music. I make the records in the studio. I listen to the mixes and masters in these as well. I always keep a pair of these in my bookbag, and like four pairs in the studio.”
4. He has an older iPhone for one purpose.
“I listen to mixes, listen to music uninterrupted.”
5. Roses mean a lot to him.
“My grandmother’s name was Rose, and I lived with throughout high school. And it was in her yard that I learned to trim and prune roses. It was something that I didn’t want to do. She very much loved for me to do it with her. So the older I got, the more I appreciated the time we would spend. So, I grew a love for roses … having them in my dressing room, having them in my hotels; ’cause once again — like the candles, and the scent, the family picture if you will — it brings familiarity to where you are.”
