After joining her mentor The-Dream on tour last month, Bria Jhane unleashes her new project titled What Is Love? via RadioKilla Records/Republic Records.
Although Jhane poses a question for the EP title, it seems as though she has some of the answers. The EP opens with the lead single “Back Bone,” a sultry tune that finds her yearning for good ole unconditional love.
“‘Backbone’ is simply about somebody supporting you and having your back no matter what happens,” Jhane explained. “I feel like we all need this support system. It’s time to be vulnerable especially with people we care about and love. It’s all about honesty and being real.”
The rest of the project sees Jhane searching for love (“Young Love”), while also making it clear that she doesn’t want to deal with immature guys (“21 and Over”). She also recognizes the vulnerable emotions one may feel when falling in love (“Swear to God” featuring The-Dream). “Damn right I’m scared / Damn right I fear you / And all of the possible things you could put me through,” she sings on the raw track.
What Is Love? is a solid effort for Jhane. In a music climate where some artists are chasing after the next trend, Jhane is positioning herself to be an authentic voice in R&B.
