At the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival last weekend, D’Angelo had the spotlight on him as his Devil’s Pie — D’Angelo documentary premiered for thousands of critics and fans.
Aside from the compelling indie film that documented acclaimed neo-soul pioneer’s comeback tour for his third album Black Messiah, a striking revelation about his new music emerged from the director Carine Bijlsma.
“He’s actually doing really well, and he’s very excited,” she revealed during a Q&A following the film debut. “He was in the studio these past weeks. He has big plans for the future, so you’ll definitely be seeing more of him.”
There is no word on if the music will be tied to his much-anticipated fourth album. In fall 2018, the low-key musician made a brief return to music and released “Unshaken” for the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack.
In addition to the small talks of new music from D’Angelo, the trailer for his documentary has surfaced. The film explores the mysterious singer’s hiatus after his Grammy-winning Voodoo album and his journey through pain life moments, including his battle with substance abuse, a horrific car accident, and the devastating loss of loved ones.
The trailer also features candid soundbites from Questlove (of the Roots) and behind-the-scenes footage of his The Second Coming Tour preparation.
