After a three-year hiatus, FKA twigs returns with a brand new single titled “Cellophane.”
The piano-driven tune finds the British singer trying to cope with a relationship that has ended. “When you’re gone I have no one to tell / And I, just want to feel you’re there / And I don’t want to have to share our love / I try but I get overwhelmed / All wrapped in cellophane, the feelings that we had,” FKA twigs sings.
Speaking about the process of creating “Cellophane,” twigs explained, “Throughout my life, I’ve practiced my way to being the best I could be, it didn’t work this time. I had to tear down every process I’d ever relied on. go deeper. rebuild. start again.”
In addition to the song release, twigs also premiered the accompanying video that was directed by Andrew Thomas Huang. The high-art visual serves as a contrast to the song’s vulnerable lyrics “Didn’t I do it for you? Why don’t I do It for you?” The simplistic clip shows FKA twigs performing a pole dance routine before things take a wild turn midway through.
Twigs, who got her start in entertainment by dancing, says she trained for months before filming the video.
“When I wrote ‘Cellophane’ over a year ago a visual narrative came to me immediately, I knew I had to learn how to pole-dance to bring it to life, and so that’s what I did,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you @andrewthomashuang, for elevating my vision beyond words. you are a visionary. @kellyvon thank you for being with me every step of the way on my precious pole yellow brick road. Working with you both on this is a dream come true.”
Twigs is gearing up to release her sophomore album later this year via Young Turks. It will follow 2014’s LP1, which was nominated for a Mercury Prize and a Brit Award.
