Normani deserves a gold medal. At the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night, the R&B/pop star out-slayed herself with her first-televised performance of “Motivation.”
From her pop, lock, and drop it segment with her squad to her solo, gymnastics choreography, Normani had a surplus of energy to spare on the basketball court stage. Surprisingly, she didn’t do her basketball dance move from the nostalgic music video.
In addition to doing her thing on the stage, Normani won a very-first Moon Person for Best R&B Video (“Waves” featuring 6LACK).
Normani’s MTV VMAs performance and award win was a feat in itself, but “Motivation” debuting at No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week was the icing on the cake.
“It was the first opportunity that I had to have fun,” she told Rolling Stone about her official lead single. I think that people have been waiting for me to have fun and I’ve had so many records like ‘Waves’ and ‘Love Lies’ and Sam [Smith’s ‘Dancing With a Stranger’], which are a little bit more R&B smooth sailing.”
