My, my, my, Johnny Gill is back. The R&B legend has returned with, Game Changer II, his first album in five years.
For his eighth studio album, Gill decided to switch up his creative approach by exploring other sounds outside of R&B. To help his vision come to fruition he worked with super producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Blac Elvis and Ralph Stacy, among others.
The album opens with “Only One,” a reggae-inspired tune where Gill addresses mistakes he’s made in his relationship and creates a plan to fix it. “My only one found out she wasn’t the only one / So now I gotta show her she’s the only one for me,” he sings. On “Fiesta” featuring Sheila E. and Carlos Santana, Gill delves into Latin music.
Gill doesn’t stray too far from traditional R&B sounds. He quickly delves back into his comfort zone with tender R&B tunes like the album’s lead single “Soul of a Woman,” “Perfect” featuring Ralph Tresvant, “Bed on Fire,” “Home” featuring Kevon Edmonds and more. He toys with a more modern R&B sound on “Best Thing,” which is a bouncy love song that contains Migos-like ad-libs.
Game Changer II is the sequel to 2014’s Game Changer, which included his number one hit “This One’s For Me and You” featuring New Edition.
