One of the beautiful things about music is an artist’s transparency about their experiences. As UMI prepares to release her upcoming EP, the 21-year-old singer shares a candid track called “Open Up.”
UMI puts her feelings on the table as she tries to come to terms with ending a relationship. “No more goodbye / I’m scared to make you cry / Can’t look you in the eye / I prayed for peace of mind,” she sings on the highly personal tune.
UMI explained the meaning behind the song in a press statement. “‘Open Up’ is a look into my heart space, painted with orange and red hues,” she said. “I wrote it about that feeling before a breakup when you’re torn between the guilt of hurting someone else and doing what’s best for you. Capturing my inner dialogue, this song is a moment of introspection.”
“Open Up” will appear on UMI’s upcoming Introspection EP, which is out June 21 via Keep Cool/RCA Records. Earlier this month, she shared the title track. She also released “Mother” and “Picture Perfect” earlier this year.
Introspection will follow UMI’s 2018 debut EP, Love Language.
