With the nation in civil unrest after more unarmed Black people are killed by police brutality, music has become more of an outlet to express hurt and frustrations.
Newly formed duo Jawan x Tiffany — comprised of Tiffany Evans and Jawan Harris — look to soothe hearts and minds with their live acoustic rendition of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 single “Mercy Mercy Me.”
The black-and-white visual opens with clips of protests in Atlanta following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. The video, which is directed by B.Rxb, soon pans to Evans who starts the urgent song in a strong voice. Harris quickly chimes in with his melodic tone.
Supported by backing vocalists, the pair effortlessly insert the poignant lyrics from Gaye’s prominent anthem “What’s Going On” to take their performance to new heights.
“Music is one of the best ways that we can express our inner thoughts and emotions,” Jawan x Tiffany said in a statement. “Sometimes we may not be able to articulate with our own words but a song can speak everything we have ever wanted to say. Now more than ever we need Mercy…and most of all love.”
If Jawan x Tiffany’s new music is anything like their chemistry on stage, we want it now.
Earlier this year, Evans lent her beautiful voice to The Colleagues’ latest album Love Dates and Heartbreaks.
