Canjelae has dropped off her debut project titled Cave Covers. Front to back, this 36-minute effort is the R&B novice’s official introduction to the music world, full of subtle tributes to a long line of artists that have shaped her sound.
In between her renditions of classics and new hits by Sade, Brandy, Missy Elliott and Ms. Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley, Canjelae makes time for originals.
Her collaboration with Jacob Latimore “Overtime” is frothy and fresh, while “Easy Love” summons the rhythm of island vibes.
Originals aside, her slow-burning duet “Everybody Here Wants You” featuring Kevin Ross finds her employing a Mya-esque tone, as she and Ross take the Jeff Buckley hit to higher heights.
The release date of the Cave Covers had a significant tie to Canjelae roots. “Releasing it on the first day of the celebration of the end of slavery in my country Bermuda is the icing on the cake and a reminder of how I want to honor that history by sharing my heart through music,” she told Rated R&B.
