One year after releasing Nostalgia & 808s Part 1, Toni Romiti has returned with a new album. Don’t Talk to Boys finds the Chicago-born singer still working through weighty topics such as success, growing up motherless and in foster care, and deadbeat relationships.
The hard-hitting opener and standout “You Don’t” details the majority of the aforementioned subjects. Yet here, Romiti isn’t asking for a pity party because all of those ups and downs have led her to the woman she says she’s “trying to be.”
“Last Straw” and “Too Many Times” are strong statements of drawing the line in love and leaving toxicity in the rearview. On “10 Steps to Get over Your Ex,” the album’s trippy and snappy closer, Romiti takes her past dealings with boys and offers sound advice to fans that need a guide on how to get over a breakup and an unrequited ex.
She also adds “Need Me,” a candid track she released last year July, to the track listing. Its matching music video can be revisited here. Janine and Jean Deaux make guest appearances, as well.
