Since September, Masego has been planning and preparing for his extended travels across the country. It all started with the soul maestro applying for a “Passport” with assistance from D’Mile. Not soon after, Masego found a travel companion (Shenseea) to split the room cost with on the dancehall-jazz anthem “Silver Tongue Devil” before musing for a “Mystery Lady” alongside his second trip guest Don Toliver. Now that his bags are all packed and his Uber has arrived at the airport, the diverse musician is Studying Abroad.
Arriving two years after the release of Lady Lady, his debut album that embedded his romantic sensibilities with a self-termed genre known as TrapHouseJazz, the six-track concept EP is evidence that Masego isn’t stagnant when it comes to mutating his artistic direction.
On “Sides of Me,” Masego portrays a nomadic protagonist whose feelings are cold as ice when it comes to settling down. He makes it clear that just because he’s in town for the night doesn’t mean he is about to cuff you. In what seems like he’s made his rounds across the world, “Bye Felicia,” which has future-oriented jazz and R&B soundscape, finds Masego taunting and waving at an uninvited ex at his crib.
The boards for Studying Abroad were manned by the likes of prominent producers such as Jack Dive, Jonah Christian, IzyBeats, and Kojo Asamoah.
On November 17, Masego will hold a virtual live concert to perform many of the new songs from the EP. The show airs at 3 p.m. ET/ 12 p.m. PT via his official YouTube page.
