Alex Isley hopes to make her legendary father Ernie Isley of The Isley Brothers proud with her guitar-based remake of “At Your Best (You Are Love).” It is the latest release in the Are + Be Spotify Singles series.
Fleshing out a fine cover of the 1976 classic, later popularized by Aaliyah in 1995, wasn’t a difficult task for Alex. She gently weaves her smooth harmonies and pleasant tone through acoustic guitar lines and soft finger snaps, giving her best to the timeless song.
“I’ll always have such a strong emotional connection to this song; it was written by my dad,” said Alex in a statement. “There’s such sweetness and honesty there, it always resonates with me. Aaliyah put her own stamp on this song in such a uniquely beautiful and timeless way, and I remember the very first time I heard it as a little girl. Growing up in the 90s, I saw how much of an impact she was making and will always have. So now, to pay homage to her in this way, through the words and music of my family, and so much thanks to Spotify, it’s definitely a full-circle moment for me.”
In March, Alex released the “Good & Plenty (Remix)” featuring Lucky Daye. The original version, which is a duet with Masego, hit streaming services back in July 2020.
Before 2020 capped, Alex appeared on Kenyon Dixon’s song “Expectations.”
Alex was among Rated R&B’s 11 R&B Artists to Watch in 2021.
