Jennifer Hudson Is One Trophy Away From EGOT Status

Winning a Tony award could make Hudson the second Black woman in history to join the EGOT club.

Jennifer Hudson is on her way to EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status, following her 2021 Daytime Emmy win in the category of Outstanding Interactive Media for a Daytime Program for Baba Yaga.

She had a voice role (The Forest) in the Eric Darnell-directed film and served as one of the four executive producers.

Hudson shared the fruitful news on social media yesterday, stating, “I am so grateful for the opportunity to lend my voice to a character and executive produce alongside this innovative team. You all inspired me doing what you do best. Receiving an Emmy for this special project is truly the icing on the cake.”

The road to Hudson’s EGOT prestige began in 2007 when she won an Oscar in the category of Best Supporting Actress for starring as Effie White in Dreamgirls.

Two years later, at the 2009 Grammys, her idol, Whitney Houston, presented her with the Best R&B Album award for her self-titled debut album. She later won another Grammy in 2017 for Best Musical Theater Album (The Color Purple).

If Hudson secures a Tony award and obtains EGOT status, she will be the second Black woman in history to complete this remarkable achievement. Whoopi Goldberg is the first. Hudson would also be the third Black person in the EGOT circle following Goldberg and John Legend.

More awards could be on the cusp for Hudson. She recently portrayed the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin in the biopic Respect, now in theaters. She also co-wrote and recorded an original song [“Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)”] for the official film soundtrack, which she fronted.

Hudson’s last album JHUD was released in 2014.
