In 2020, Billy Porter told Rated R&B in an exclusive interview that he was gearing up to release a project the following year, stating, “I’m picking up where Sylvester left off. It’s time.”
The multi-hyphenate, whose awards shelf holds a Grammy, Tony, Emmy, and other deserved trophies, has kept his word and released his new song “Children.” The MNEK-produced dance cut finds Porter using his experience in the LGBTQ+ community as a textbook for the new generation to follow as they walk in their truth without shame or apologies.
“Not trying patronize a little bit / Baby I empathize I must admit / But I / Need you to recognize that ain’t it / See a change starts today, better wipe those tears away,” he boldly sings.
While Porter released an album (Untitled) back in 1997, featuring the breakout single “Show Me,” he is more confident with what he’s creating in the studio these days. “For the first, my music is what I want it to be, what I want it to say, which is hope, love,” he shared in a statement.
With a single as energized as “Children,” fans can only hope for Porter to follow his timeline for the anticipated project he teased with Rated R&B last year.
