Rising R&B group FLO was among the performers at the 2022 Soul Trains Awards Red Carpet Special. The British act — composed of members Jorja, Renée and Stella — performed an acoustic rendition of their viral song “Cardboard Box.”
The kiss-off anthem, produced by MNEK, is lifted from FLO’s debut EP, The Lead, which dropped July 8 via Island Records UK/Uptown Records/Republic Records. They reissued the EP in September with “Not My Job” as a bonus track.
“We’re very proud of [The Lead],” Stella told Rated R&B in an interview. “It encapsulates us being together, being strong and getting through anything. I think that’s a good message we like to put out for the people who listen.”
Renée added, “For me, the EP literally means taking the lead, being strong in all that you do and being a woman.”
Speaking on the process of creating “Cardboard Box,” Jorja said: “It was one of our first sessions with MNEK, who is the most talented person in the world. We was just having a conversation — because usually in the beginning of sessions, you just have a chat about what’s going on in your life at that moment in time. I know it was a bit of a rough time for me.”
“It was like [creating] a happy breakup song,” said Renée. “You know you’re going through a situation, but you still wanna feel good about it.”
Rated R&B first announced FLO as an added performer, with FLO confirming the news. “We’re serving virtual performances for the international liferssss,” they tweeted on Thursday.
