Muni Long opened the 2022 Soul Train Awards as one of the musical guests. The singer-songwriter delivered a debut performance of “Plot Twist” from her debut album, Public Displays of Affection: The Album.
With the stage designed as a bedroom, Long, dressed in red-colored silk pajamas, gave theatrics for the dramatic number.
Actress Paige Hurd and actor Skyh Black, plus actor/comedian D.C. Young Fly were part of the performance for surprising moments.
Long, nominated for Best New Artist at the ceremony, wasn’t gone long. She later participated in the Soul Cypher alongside Alex Vaughn, Durand Bernarr and Tasha Cobs Leonard.
Public Displays of Affection: The Album was released Sept. 23 via Long’s Supergiant Records imprint in partnership with Def Jam.
The 18-song set combined the following two EPs: Public Displays of Affection (2021) and Public Displays of Affection Too (2022). She also included five additional tracks, one of which was “Plot Twist,” which also has an interlude.
“Hrs and Hrs,” the platinum-selling single from Long, appears on Public Displays of Affection: The Album. The love anthem recently earned her three nominations at the 2023 Grammys, including Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song.
“This one is just a vibe. I was washing dishes, and it was just a very monotonous task. I hate cleaning up. So I decided to listen to some tracks while I was washing dishes. This one came up, and I just started freestyling,” Long told Rated R&B about the concept of “Hrs and Hrs.”
She added, “I would every now and then use my elbow to start it over from the top. I think I wrote the song in maybe 20 minutes. I went in the studio a couple of days later and recorded it. It’s probably my favorite song to sing live. It’s just so beautiful.”
Furthermore, Long is one of the 10 Best New Artist nominees at the 65th Grammy Awards.
Long recently joined Eric Bellinger for his “Obsession (Remix).”
