Keyshia Cole has returned with “Forever Is A Thing,” an original song featured in the closing credits of her upcoming Lifetime biopic, Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story.
Cole co-wrote the song with her frequent collaborator Ron Fair, who co-produced it alongside S1 and Sir Tim.
“Forever Is A Thing” is a grief-stricken ballad that pays tribute to her mother, Frankie Lons, who passed away in July 2021.
In total control of her voice at all times, Cole painfully comes to terms with the fact that her mother’s physical existence was limited by her imperfections. Despite this, Cole still yearns for her mother’s presence, even though she understands forever is not a possibility.
“Shoulda known the day would come when you would go away / But I was too wrapped up in your love to ever know, how would I know? / That you didn’t wanna stay / You were ready to leave / Am I just a fool / To ever think forever is a thing?” Cole sings.
“Forever Is A Thing” is Cole’s first song release since 2021’s “I Don’t Wanna Be In Love.” The ballad, which was said to be part of her eighth studio album, peaked at No. 11 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart that same year.
Regarding Cole’s upcoming album, she announced last summer that it will be released sometime this year. It is unclear whether the two mentioned songs will be included on the final tracklist.
Towards the end of 2020, Fair hinted to Rated R&B about Cole’s highly anticipated album release. “She’s figured out who she is to all her fans with the choice of songs on this record and it’s going to be extraordinarily satisfying,” Fair told Rated R&B.
Cole’s next album will follow 2017’s 11: 11 Reset, released on Epic Records. The album spawned two singles: “You” featuring Remy Ma and French Montana and “Incapable.”
The feature film Keyshia Cole: This Is My Story will debut on Lifetime this Saturday, June 24, at 8 p.m. ET.
In the movie, directed by D’Angela Proctor and Manu Boyer, Cole portrays herself and acclaimed actress Debbi Morgan stars as Lons. Cole is also an executive producer of the film.
“This is a story of a daughter’s love for her mother and although my heart remains broken from her untimely passing I am honored to be sharing it with the world,” said Cole in a previous statement.
