Rising soul singer J. Brown has a new accomplishment under his belt. His current single, “My Whole Heart,” has risen from No. 2 to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart for the week dated Oct. 28.
It’s J. Brown’s first No. 1 on both this specific chart and any other Billboard chart.
It’s worth noting that this is the second time this year that an artist under the SoNo Recording Group (SRG/ILS) label has achieved a chart-topping Adult R&B single.
Back in February, Kenny Lattimore accomplished this feat for the second time in his career with his song “Take a Dose,” which spent two weeks at the top of the charts.
Carvin Haggins and Giancarlo “EVO” Evola produced “My Whole Heart,” which debuted at No. 21 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart during the week of July 28. Six weeks later, the song entered the top 10 of the chart at No. 8.
Before ascending to the summit, “My Whole Heart” spent three weeks at No. 2 out of its 14 weeks.
J. Brown launched his Adult R&B chart career in Nov. 2018 with his debut single, “Sunrise Sunset,” which debuted at No. 30 and peaked at No. 10.
Four subsequent singles, including his current, reached the top ten on the Adult Airplay chart.
Here’s a breakdown of J. Brown’s appearances on the Adult R&B Airplay chart:
- “Give It 2 U,” No. 15 peak (2019)
- “Moon,” No. 7 peak (2020)
- “Vibe,” No. 10 peak (2021)
- “Don’t Rush” featuring Tank, No. 7 peak (2022)
J. Brown’s fifth chart entry, “Don’t Rush,” comes from his 2022 debut album, Chapter & Verses, which later received a deluxe edition.
“My Whole Heart” also topped R&B radio this week, marking the artist’s first success on this airplay format.
The song was sent to R&B radio stations in July and quickly became a favorite, with 16 new adds at the time, making it the second most added song on the format.
Discussing his latest single, J. Brown previously said, “When we created ‘My Whole Heart,’ we wanted to come up with a song that would show a woman how much she means to me. It was something that we all felt was missing in R&B at the moment when we started this project. I wanted the person listening, to feel the raw emotions being delivered and I truly hope the song resonates with them.”
“My Whole Heart” appears on J. Brown’s sophomore album, The Art of Making Love, released in July. The LP includes the previously shared “Weightless” featuring Kevin Ross and “123 Fourplay.”
