Kenya Vaun Releases Feel-Good Song ‘Used To’

It samples Billy Stewart's 1965 classic "Sitting in the Park"

“You remind me of that old-school loving, baby no, I’m not bluffing,” Kenya Vaun sings on her new single “Used To,” out now on 300 Entertainment.

The song’s enchanting lyrics, underscored by euphoric production that samples Billy Stewart’s “Sitting in the Park,” serve as a heartwarming love letter to her partner. Throughout the song, Vaun lauds her lover for embodying the commitment she always desired.

“‘Used To’ is about someone finally receiving the love that they’ve always wanted, but aren’t used to receiving,” Vaun explains.

“In this generation, a lot of people get bored really fast and move on. I approached it from the perspective of ‘old-school love.’ My definition of ‘old school love’ is someone who stays there unconditionally throughout the good and the bad times.”

The visual for “Used To” captures the same essence evoked in Amerie’s classic “Why Don’t We Fall in Love.”

Like Amerie in the 2002 gem, Vaun strolls through a neighborhood — but instead of summer, it’s in the fall – soaking in life: Black businesses booming, couples holding hands, and friends playing ball.

“Used To” is the follow-up to the Philadelphia-based singer’s 2023 track “Summer,” produced by Carvin & Ivan and Ronny “FLIP” Colson. The song is currently No. 7 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart.

“‘Summer’ just brings me so much peace because it talks about that escape that a lot of us need or want, whether you’re working a 9-5, dealing with personal issues, or whatever it may be,” Vaun explained. “When I listen to it, it just makes me feel like I’m on a vacation or just in this peaceful place wherever that may be in my own world – it just makes me feel good.”

In February 2023, Vaun released her first single on 300 Entertainment, “Overrated.”

Regarding “Overrated,” Vaun said, “For me, I feel like in this generation a lot of people are so ready to just move on.

She continued, “When I was writing this song, I was going through my own situation, and I felt like a lot of times what you’re feeling isn’t unconditional love and it’s just for that moment.”
