British singers Jaz Karis and Mahalia have teamed up for a new song, “Nice Girls,” out now via MNRK Records.
The mellow, piano-laden tune the two vocalists lament about a love lost. “Nice girls, they lose / I can’t get caught up / Falling for you / When you tore my heart up / I’m tired of always running right back / ‘Cause you don’t really love me like that,” they sing.
Speaking on “Nice Girls,” Karis shares, “This song is about karma. This song is about how it feels now being on the other side of the story and why good girls never win. A collaboration of two hurt lover girls — I love this song so much because everyone has felt like this at some point.”
Mahalia adds, “I have been a lover of Jaz’s music for so long that I still can’t believe we didn’t have a song together until now. When she sent me ‘Nice Girls,’ I knew immediately that it would be the perfect one to duet on. It’s a moment for two women to share the pain over a lost love. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of this record and am honored to have been asked.”
“Nice Girls” is the follow-up to Karis’ single “Met You at a Bar,” featuring Tone Stith, released in February.
Regarding the track, Karis shared, “‘Met You at a Bar’ for me is really a depiction of a lot of dating experiences in my generation. It’s full of romance and sweet nothings but ultimately doesn’t lead to anything serious because of the lack of trust between two people. Sonically, we wanted it to feel warm and inviting, but the conversation between me and Tone remains bittersweet.”
Last year, Karis ushered in a new era of music with “Little Blue Moon,” her first release on MNRK Music Group. “‘Little Blue Moon’ was a conversation between me and God,” explained Karis. “Knowing someone loves you unconditionally is a beautiful thing and this song is my token of appreciation for that.”
